SingStar Rock Ballads, like all other SingStar games, except the first installment, measures the pitch of a player and does not compare it with the original voice, this means that it can be sung in any octave higher or lower and you can still get points.

Normally, 2 players compete at the same time, although the game includes other types of modes for more players. It is about singing the most similar or equally, trying to tune the same, to be able to score points. SingStar Rock Ballads challenges players to sing like the original songs, but with their own voice. The lyrics of the song are displayed throughout the game at the bottom of the screen. Players interact with the PS2 via USB microphones, while a song is shown, along with its music video, on screen.
